Congratulations to the Roth Lab whose abstract submitted for the ASA 08 Annual Meeting, entitled “Mechanisms of Induction of Ischemic Tolerance with erythropoietin” has been selected among 10 out of 2100 submitted abstracts for presentation at the “Best Abstracts of the Meeting: Anesthesiology Editors’ Picks” Special Session at the Orange County Convention Center from 8:00 - 10:00 am Monday, October 20 in Room W230A. The authors are Dr. Roth, with DACC Research Associate John Dreixler, Ph.D., senior research technician Afzhal Shaikh, and Dr. Daniel Rosenbaum, Chairman, Department of Neurology, Downstate Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY. The research was supported by National Institutes of Health grants EY10343 to Dr. Roth, EY 11253 to Dr. Rosenbaum, and a grant in aid to Dr. Roth from the Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness.

Congratulations to a number of departmental members on their achievements at the recently concluded meeting of the Illinois Society of Anesthesiologists: Wendy Binstock, M.D., was elected as President Tom Cutter, M.D., was re-elected as Treasurer Bill McDade, M.D., was re-elected as alternate delegate for district 1 Ori Gottlieb, M.D. Was re-elected as District 1 Director and was elected as an alternate delegate to the American Society of Anesthesiologists.

Congratulations to Dr. David Glick , who has been formally notified that he has been selected to deliver the keynote address at the Student Clinician Ceremony for Pritzker's rising third year medical students.  These students select a single faculty member who they've identified as most capable of giving them direction, insight  and encouragement in the transition to clinical medicine from the didactics of the first two years of medical school.

Congratulations to Dr. Apfelbaum, who was given the SAMBA Distinguished Service Award. It is presented to an individual for outstanding achievement in ambulatory anesthesia and is the highest honor which the Society can bestow. Dr. Apfelbaum was also selected as the recipient of the 2009 ISA Distinguished Service Award. The Illinois Society of Anesthesiologist presents this award annually to a physician who has made outstanding contributions to our society and to the field of anesthesiology.

Congratulations to Dr. Jennifer Hofer, who was selected as a FAER (Foundation for Anesthesia Education Research) Resident Scholar for 2008! Jennifer will represent our department at this year's ASA Annual Meeting and have an opportunity to learn about the "educational, scientific, and political issues facing the specialty". The program includes all of the educational components of the meeting, as well as the chance to observe the ASA House of Delegates.

Awards received: by the DACC OR Blood Analysis Lab for Best QI Project for 2007, and Susan Ourada for Excellence in Compliance. The two awards will be received at the National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week celebration scheduled on April 23rd 2008. The Quality Improvement Projects Poster Presentation will be held from 12:00 to 4:00pm, and the Lecture and Awards ceremony will be held from 3:30 to 4:30pm at the Goldblatt Lobby.

Congratulations to: Neil Ray, a Pritzker MS2 who spent last summer doing research in the department, received best in section (economics) recognition for his abstract at the International Anesthesia Research Society Meeting in San Francisco.  His abstract was entitled “Does Past Performance Guarantee Future Results? ER Visits, Outpatient Appointments, and Day of Surgery Cancellations”.  Neil was mentored during his summer research by Dr's. Avery Tung and David Glick.

DACC is the recipient of a grant from the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research. Dr. Roth is the program director at DACC. University of Chicago medical student Yang Shen will perform research, supported by Medical Student Anesthesia Research Fellowships. This is a competitive program which is designed to expose outstanding medical students to anesthesia research and to encourage such students to consider careers in academic anesthesia. The students apply and if accepted, they are placed according to their interests.

Congratulations to Dr. Jonathan Moss, Professor and Vice Chair for Research, he has been selected to deliver the 2008 T.H. Seldon Memorial Lecture at the IARS 82nd Clinical & Scientific Congress in San Francisco, CA March 29-April 1. The T.H. Seldon Memorial is the highlight of the meeting. The lecture will take place on Sunday, March 30, 2008 at 1:00 p.m.

Award given to the Technicians Group; The Technician Group has been awarded the ASATT Region 4 Educational Award for 2007.  It is given “in recognition of outstanding continued dedication in sponsoring, promoting, and/or furthering education for anesthesia technicians and technologists.”  We were nominated for the spring meeting that was held here back in April.  The technicians who attended the San Francisco meeting (Zane, Dave, Sam, and Donna) accepted the award on behalf of the DACC.

American Society of Anesthesiologists Annual Meeting; The 2007 ASA Annual Meeting will be held in San Francisco, California on October 13-17, 2007. The San Francisco Hilton and the San Francisco Marriott are the co-headquarters hotels. House of Delegates activities will be held at the Marriott, and educational sessions and exhibits will be scheduled at Moscone Center. Research Grant Awarded; Shanti Shenoy, a 3rd year medical student has received a $5K grant from Illinois Society for Prevention of Blindness to work on Protein Kinase B: Mechanisms of Neuroprotection in Ischemic Preconditioning. She will be working with Dr. Roth.

Congratulations to Erica Stein, M.D. and Julia Sapozhnik, MD, a Northwestern resident for being elected co president elect of the resident component of the ISA during the 2007-08 year and co president of the resident component during the 2008-09 year. We are excited to have both of these outstanding candidates as elected officers for the ISA. Summer Clinical Research Award; Yang Shen, a 2nd yr medical student has received a Summer Clinical Research Award from the American Federation for Medical Research. Her project will be to study morbidity and mortality after spinal fusion surgery using the AHRQ database. She will be working with Dr. Roth.

Jason Waldinger from University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine will work with Dr. Roth on “Animal Model of Perioperative Ischemic Optic Neuropathy.” Christine Jette from the University of Washington School of Medicine will work with Richard Cook on his cognitive technology project. Congratulations to these two outstanding students, and thanks to FAER for supporting their research.
